The UN’s annual climate summit taking place in Madrid opened on Monday 2 December with a rousing speech from Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General.
He said: “To address the climate emergency, we need a rapid
& deep change in how we do business, how we generate power, how we build
cities, how we move and how we feed the world.
“If we don’t urgently change our way of life, we jeopardize life itself.”
Other issues featuring were a report from Oxfam and Save the Children on the harrowing effects of child poverty caused by climate change, the USA’s company bosses and unions position on the Paris Accord, a surge in corporate renewable energy commitments, and insurers withdrawing cover and support for coal.
